Marisa Corti has taken a winding path to her current career as an adult nurse practitioner. "This is my second career and third degree," she says. "The first was a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and I worked for IBM for 14 years in various administrative positions."

Corti says she became very interested in medicine later on in life. "I decided to go into nursing because I liked the nursing model of patient care. As a nurse, the patient is treated as a whole and we realize that there are many variables that influence a person's state of wellness. Therefore, we are not just focused on the condition. Nurses address these variables when considering plans of care. Nurse practitioners play a vital role in helping with disease prevention and health promotion through teaching and taking into account the patient's cultural beliefs and values to enhance compliance. I believe this is a necessary skill given the spiraling costs of health care. Because nurse practicitioners have a more autonomous role in patient care, we can take the time to teach the patient what he or she needs to know in order to take better care of themself and, hopefully, avoid the onset of a serious illness or catch one in its earliest stages."

On the road to becoming a nurse, Corti attended the College of Mount St. Vincent as an undergraduate, where she majored in nursing. When she was ready to pursue her master's, Corti decided to come to WestConn. "I already had a long commute to work," she says. "I didn't want a long commute to school."

Once here, Corti found the faculty not only knowledgeable, but inspirational as well. "Not only was Professor of Nursing Dr. Patricia Lund my thesis adviser, but I also viewed her as my mentor," she says. "She is an inspiration because she has accomplished so many things while working, raising a family and furthering her education. Her words of encouragement enabled me to plow through the drudgery of thesis writing. She made it seem easy."

Asked what she will remember most about her WestConn experience, Corti says, "I will miss listening to the orchestra practice while I was sitting in class and I will also miss all my fellow students. They were some of the most kindest, supportive people I have ever encountered, and I learned so much from them.”

Corti’s advice to new students entering WCSU is: “I would tell incoming students that whatever they choose to study, make sure it is something that they love -- or at least are very interested in -- because they'll be more likely to pour their heart into it and to be good at it. Money is not important; happiness is. Do what you love.”
